Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. Outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease are widely reported globally, and each outbreak can affect many hundreds of people with a fatality rate of typically 10 to 30%. Under a duty of care, supported by country specific regulations and codes of practice, all Duty Holders (as an employer or someone in control of premises) are required to identify, assess, manage and control the risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria.
