HSE Training Courses

Competence is not just a legal requirement in health, safety and environmental management; it is the foundation of everything else. Risk assessments, control measures and management plans only work when the people responsible for implementing them understand what they are doing and why. ISHEM delivers accredited and bespoke HSE training courses to organisations in the UK and across the globe, drawing on the same technical expertise that underpins its consultancy services to provide training that is practical, up to date and genuinely useful in the workplace.
Why HSE Training Matters
UK health and safety legislation places a clear obligation on employers to ensure that their workers are competent to carry out their roles safely. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must provide adequate information, instruction and training to employees. In specific areas such as Legionella management, asbestos awareness and COSHH, there are more detailed competence requirements set out in the applicable approved codes of practice and technical guidance.
Beyond legal compliance, well-trained responsible persons, duty holders and facilities teams make better decisions. They identify risks earlier, implement control measures more consistently and respond more effectively when something goes wrong. Training is not a box-ticking exercise; it is a practical investment in the reliability of your compliance arrangements.
Our Training Courses
ISHEM offers training across six subject areas, with courses available in classroom, virtual and e-learning formats depending on the subject and audience. All courses can be adapted to reflect your organisation's specific risk profile, premises and working practices.
Legionella Training
A suite of five modular courses covering all aspects of Legionella awareness and control, from foundational knowledge through to the practical implementation of control measures for domestic, cooling, process and leisure water systems. Each module runs for four hours and is available online or in the classroom. Suitable for responsible persons, health and safety advisors, site operatives and engineers.

Duty Holder Training
A free 45-minute e-learning course designed specifically for duty holders and accountable persons who need to understand their legal responsibilities in relation to Legionella management. Covers Legionella and its health effects, risk assessment obligations, training and competence requirements and record keeping. Accessible at any time with no prior booking required.
Responsible Person Training
Targeted training for those formally appointed as responsible persons for water safety management, covering the practical duties, record-keeping requirements and escalation procedures associated with the role.

BOHS Endorsed Training
Courses endorsed by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), provide nationally recognised qualifications for professionals working in occupational hygiene and related disciplines. Delivered by ISHEM consultants who are themselves BOHS members and registrants.
Asbestos Training
Asbestos awareness and management training for duty holders, facilities managers, responsible persons and anyone whose work could bring them into contact with asbestos-containing materials. Delivered in line with CAR 2012 requirements and available in classroom and virtual formats.

Healthcare Training
Specialist training for NHS trusts, the HSE, care homes, GP practices and other healthcare organisations, covering the additional obligations and sector-specific guidance that applies in clinical environments, including HTM 04-01, Guidelines for preventing and controlling the growth of Legionella bacteria in healthcare water system 2011 and the management of water safety in healthcare premises.
How Our Training Is Delivered
ISHEM training courses are available in three formats, giving organisations the flexibility to choose the approach that best suits their teams and operational constraints.

Classroom
Delivered at your premises or at a suitable venue. Best suited to group training where discussion, scenario-based learning and interaction with a qualified trainer adds the most value. Courses can be tailored to incorporate your site-specific risk assessments, procedures and records.

Virtual
Live instructor-led sessions delivered online. Provides the same interactive format as classroom delivery without the requirement for travel or a physical venue. Particularly well suited to multi-site organisations, training staff across different locations simultaneously.

E-learning
Self-paced online learning available at any time. Currently available for the Duty Holder Legionella Awareness course, which is provided free of charge. Suitable for individuals who need to complete training independently or as a refresher.
All training is delivered by qualified and experienced HSE consultants, not generic trainers. The people teaching ISHEM courses are the same specialists who carry out risk assessments, audits and compliance consultancy in the field every day.
Bespoke Training
Off-the-shelf training courses have their place, but they are not always the most effective option. Organisations with complex premises, specific risk profiles or sector-specific obligations often benefit more from training that is built around their actual situation.
ISHEM can develop bespoke training programmes tailored to your organisation's water systems, building type, operational practices and applicable legislation. Bespoke courses can incorporate your own risk assessments, water safety plans, asbestos registers and management procedures, making the training directly relevant to the decisions and responsibilities your people face day to day.
