Whether a permit is required depends on the nature of your operations. Permit requirements apply to a wide range of activities including waste management operations, discharges to water, emissions to air from certain industrial processes, and abstraction of water. The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 set out the activities that require a permit or an exemption registration. ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Duty of Care, anyone who produces, carries, treats or disposes of controlled waste has a legal duty to ensure it is managed without harm to human health or the environment. This includes using only registered waste carriers, providing accurate waste transfer notes and ensuring waste is sent only to appropriately permitted facilities. ISHEM can audit your current waste management arrangements and advise on where your obligations are being met and where improvements are required.

A Phase I investigation is a desk-based assessment that reviews historical land use, geological and hydrogeological information and site records to identify potential sources of contamination. It does not involve any physical sampling. A Phase II investigation follows where Phase I identifies a risk that needs to be confirmed or characterised, involving intrusive works such as trial pits, boreholes and soil and groundwater sampling. Both are typically required as part of planning applications for development on land with a potentially contaminative history.
